Since we missed the annual Lucketts Country Fair in August this year, we decided to try out the Bluemont Festival, which appeared to be similar. Bluemont is about a 30 minute drive from our house, but once we got to the main drag in town, it took about another 15 minutes to drive down the road to get to the festival parking area. The street was blocked in one direction so that pedestrians could use it, but they seemed to be milling all over the street and not just in the 'pedestrian lane.' Finally we found a place to park, but it was past the boys' usual lunchtime already and we had to walk all the way through the festival to get to the food part. Then we had to wait in line quite awhile to order our overpriced chicken fingers and fries. Finally, we had food but alas, all of the chairs were taken so we had to sit on the ground to eat. I whipped out Dylan's light, gauzy blanket and we all crammed onto that to avoid sitting on the muddy ground. We didn't realize when we set up camp that we were only a few feet away from an alpaca pen...phew, were they smelly. So it wasn't exactly 'the best lunch ever' but at least we did get to eat.
After lunch, we discovered 'The Children's Fair' and out of all the stuff that was offered in there, the only thing the boys were interested in was this game where you toss plastic balls into the goat and pig holes on the big painted board. They were obsessed with this and didn't want to leave.
Dylan would walk right up to one of the holes, push the ball through it and then shout "I did it, Mama! I DID IT!!" Really cute!
I'd been promising the boys that they'd get to ride ponies at this fair, and it was going to be Dylan's very first pony ride. However, when I saw the size of these beasts, I decided that Dylan and his Mama weren't ready for him to be up that high off the ground yet! Evan was willing, though, and he rode like a pro. He looked so cute in the helmet they made him wear, too!
Overall it was a fun outing but I hope to make it back to the Lucketts Country Fair next year. Much closer to our house, better, less-strung-out layout, and smaller ponies!
