I left work early on Halloween afternoon so I could volunteer at the boys' parties at preschool. I'd only been there about 5 minutes and was in Dylan's room dressing a little boy's in his costume when one of Evan's teachers tracked me down and said I was needed in the office. There I found a crying Evan with an ice pack on his head. Turns out he'd been dancing in his classroom and one of the teachers had left the top half of the bathroom Dutch door open and he did one of his big jumps and gouged his scalp on the corner of the door. It wasn't a very big wound but it was bleeding and we couldn't tell how deep it was. I decided to be on the safe side and take him to an urgent care clinic to see if he needed stitches. He got really upset because he didn't want to miss "Trunk-Or-Treat" with his class. This involves the kids parading around the school parking lot in their costumes and going up to several staff members' cars and selecting treats out of the car trunks. Dylan's class was going to go out first so I decided to let him go with Dylan and then I'd leave Dylan at school for Tom to pick up. He was angry about "going outside with the babies" but once he got out there and saw the cool 'treats' to choose from, he didn't really mind anymore. Dylan quickly spotted the big firetruck outside that had a smoke machine underneath it, and he was obsessed. He couldn't care less about the treats, he just wanted to stare at the smoke!
As it turned out, Evan did not need stitches. The staff members at the clinic were very nice to Evan and admired his Iron Man costume and gave him a little flashing light reflector that he could take with him Trick-Or-Treating. I was just really relieved that he was fine and wasn't going to have to stay home that night. He would NOT have been happy!
