Sick Days & A Snow Day

Evan started running a fever on Sunday night (March 3rd) and complained that his stomach and head hurt.  He also had an awful cough left over from a cold he'd had the week before. Tom was up with him for a big chunk of the night. I took him to the doctor on Monday morning and he tested negative for Strep (which was going around his preschool class).  I was told that it was probably just a virus and would need to run its course. I was able to work from home the rest of the day and stayed with him. During my lunch break, we played Hungry, Hungry Hippos and  Candy Land. He seemed to have an okay day overall.

Then on Monday night, he went to bed really early but then woke Tom up around 12:30 a.m. He was burning up with fever again. I heard them go downstairs so I went to check on them and found them sitting up in Tom's recliner. Evan was wide awake and was watching "Super Why" and Tom was trying his best to doze off sitting up so he could function at work the next day. I sent Tom to sleep in Evan's bed and I took Evan into our room and turned the TV on in there. I figured he would drift off within a half hour or so and I could turn off the TV and go back to bed. But no, he stayed awake until around 2:30!! He finally fell asleep but it took me about another hour to get back to sleep because Evan was kicking, flailing around and coughing in his sleep. Some time around 3:30, I finally succumbed to sheer exhaustion and slept soundly until 5:30 a.m., at which point I was woken up to the sound of Dylan calling "Mama!!!  Mama!!!"  So I stayed home with Evan again on Tuesday. Even though he desperately needed a nap (and so did I), he refused to fall asleep...so it was a rough day for both of us. And that night, he had another rough night and Tom got up with him again.

On Wednesday morning, we woke up to find "white stuff on the floor" (Dylan's description of snow). In fact, it was the biggest snowstorm we've had this season, so the whole family stayed at home. Dylan enjoyed looking at the snow and being at home with us but poor Evan was miserable and grumpy.  The cats weren't quite sure what to make of all the white stuff!

Finally, Evan went down for a 'monster nap' on Wednesday afternoon.  Uncharacteristically, Dylan actually resisted taking a nap and kept trying to fight it. Eventually the nap won, and he fell asleep lying horizontally in his crib with his legs up and his knees bent. He slept like that for quite awhile before flipping over and straightening out.

On Thursday I went into the office and Tom stayed home with Evan, who was still running a low grade fever! Finally the fever broke that evening. I stayed home with him on Friday but he was feeling much better. Tom met us at Moe's for lunch and I took the afternoon off and took him to Target (which he LOVES!)  Then we went to pick up Dylan from school and he got to say hi to all of his friends. He was immediately surrounded by classmates and teachers and they all hugged him and said how they'd missed him. He was out of school for an entire week!!  So glad the virus has finally left him and noone else in the family has gotten it, so far. (Fingers crossed!!)
