Pneumonia!
After discovering that Evan was running a fever Friday night, I got him an appointment with his pediatrician on Saturday morning. The last time he'd been to the doctor was in June for his 4-Year Appointment where he got multiple vaccination shots. As a result of those shots, he was not at all enthusiastic about seeing the doctor again. I reassured him that there would be no shots and all the doctor would do was look at him. Well, she immediately ordered a Flu Test (two long Q-Tip swabs stuck way up the nostrils and swirled around) and a Strep Test ( long wooden stick to hold the tongue down while another Q-Tip swabs the back of the throat.) He had an absolute fit, crying and screaming "I DON'T LIKE THE DOCTORS! I WANT TO LEAVE NOW!" Both of tests turned out negative, but when the doc listened to his lungs, she said she heard the distinctive sound of pneumonia in one of his lungs. I must've looked a bit shocked and said "That's a scary word" but she assured me that he wasn't likely to end up hospitalized and would just need to be on antibiotics for 10 days and that should do the trick, along with lots of rest and fluids. Well, we're getting the fluids and antibiotics down him but the rest part has been kind of a lost cause. Children's Advil brings his fever down so that he no longer feels bad, and then he runs WILD all over the house. Then the fever starts to creep back and he settles down for awhile. So we give him Advil and the cycle starts all over again. Phew! He has to go back to the doctor for a recheck in a few days and hopefully he'll be able to go back to preschool soon. He was supposed to start his new Pre-Kindergarten class tomorrow but now he won't be able to go. :(
