Christmas Explosion Cake

After my great cake disaster of 2013 (see a couple of posts below), I was determined to redeem myself. I got the idea to use red and green food coloring with a white cake mix to make a Christmas-themed cake. This time, I armed myself with 'pan lining paper' (parchment paper on the top side and aluminum foil on the under side) to put in the cake pans to keep the cakes from sticking to the pans.

I divided the batter into 3 bowls and left one of the bowls plain, colored one red and one green. I then alternated pouring each of the colors into the pan and then stuck a knife in and swirled the colors together.

Both cakes rose really well this time and turned out really pretty (in a psychedelic-Christmas sort of way.) :)  I put white Vanilla frosting between the two layers and all over the top and sides and then sprinkled all over with green and red colored sprinkles.

And VOILA!
It looks really pretty and tastes delicious! Christmas cake experiment successfully completed!
